Dice

A small ensemble of actors learn the entire script of a classic text. Every night, the audience rolls the dice to determine who plays who and the show goes on.

I’ve participated in all seven iterations of Dice:

Dice: Twelfth Night
The first Dice production! I ate a lot of snacks as Feste, served as co-fight captain, and became the first actor to play all 8 tracks.

Dice: Hamlet
I served as co-ensemble director and co-fight captain, playing 6 out of 7 tracks thanks to a lucky closing night.

Dice: As You Like It
We not only randomized the cast, but also the order of the scenes every night. Plus there was an individualized karaoke element to every track. And it was immersive. Oh, and I was fight captain again.

Pride & PrejuDICE
A world premiere adaptation of the text, this immersive Regency house party had a live band, party games, and a lot of dancing. There weren’t any fights, but I did brush off my trumpet.

Dice: Romeo & Juliet
I served as co-fight captain and dance captain of this breakneck production, playing 6 out of 7 tracks and opening and closing as Juliet.

Dice Keeper: Twelfth Night
Iterating on our Dice concept, this production introduced a new wrinkle: The Dice Keeper, who changes the directorial concept for each performance with no warning to the cast. I served as co-fight captain and played 6 out of 7 tracks in addition to a hybrid three-person Feste track that was introduced for one night only at the whim of the Dice Keeper.

Dice: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
For the first time, we shifted the location of our Dice performance to the outdoors. This semi-immersive production brought the audience into the forest with the lovers and the fairies before returning to the Duke’s palace for the infamous play within a play. I served as the fight captain, played 6 out of 7 tracks, and got locked out of playing a track for the first time in my Dice career - apparently the universe was enthusiastic about me singing “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and swishing my cloak around as Track 7 (Bottom/Egeus)!

Praise for Shakespeare Dice: Twelfth Night:

"Based on the premise, you might expect a harried and unfinished production, but this show does not follow the rules of logic. There's beautiful blocking and choreography, constant and clever improvisation, and characterization that rivals—even surpasses—Seattle Rep's 2007 production of Twelfe Night. Somehow, they even pull off stage combat. This is magic. "

Classical

I enjoy the textual challenge of classical theatre and I specialize in working with Shakespeare. Shakespearean text calls me to be a detective and a linguist, engaging body and brain to communicate complex thoughts.

Whether aiding in new work development, or hearing an old play in a new way, readings are some of my favorite theatrical events to participate in. Stripping everything away to just the words is its own kind of magic.
